Detailed Solution

The above statement is True. In Madras Presidency, 35000 trees were cut annually for sleepers during the British rule.
The rapid growth of the rail network began around 1860 and continued throughout the early 1900s. About 25,500 kilometres of track had been constructed by the year 1890. As the railways expanded across India, more trees were cut down. Over 35,000 trees were cut down each year for sleepers in the Madras Presidency. To meet the growing demand, the government awarded contracts to several people. These contractors started chopping down trees at will. Forests beside the railway tracks began to disappear at an alarming rate.
