It is true that in the Non-Cooperation Movement at Awadh, peasants were led by Baba Ramchandra. Baba Ramchandra was a sanyasi and led the movement against landlords who demanded exorbitant rents and other cesses from peasants. As a result, the villagers were forced to contribute labour without payment, i.e., begar and they were regularly evicted from leased lands as they had no security of tenure. The peasant movement demanded a social boycott of oppressive landlords, abolition of begar, and revenue reduction.
