We know that, P=FA, where P is the pressure exerted, A is the surface area and F is the force exerted on it.
We can see that pressure is inversely proportional to area. That's why the flat shoes have a large area in contact with the ground. Due to the large area, less pressure acts on the soft sand. So, the flat shoes do not sink into the soft sand. On the other hand, heels have a small area in contact with the ground; hence, large pressure acts on the soft sand, causing heels to sink into the sand. Due to this, walking with heels is difficult on soft sand.
