In October 1929, Lord Irwin made India a hazy promise of "dominion status."
"Go back, Simon" was shouted at the Simon Commission when it arrived in India in 1928. All parties, including the Muslim League and the Congress, took part in the protests. Viceroy Lord Irwin made an ambiguous offer of India having "dominion status" in the future and convened a Round Table Conference to develop a new constitution in a bid to win their support in October 1929. The Congress leaders were unimpressed by this. Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose's radical faction of the Congress became more vocal.
