These gases have a stable configuration and are unreactive and are therefore also called inert gases. The valence shells of noble gases are completely filled; they do not combine with other elements to form compounds. Hence, noble gases are chemically unreactive. So noble gases are known as inert gases because of their reluctance to combine with elements to form compounds.
