A real image occurs when rays converge, and a virtual image occurs when rays only appear to converge. Real images can be produced using concave mirrors and converging lenses only when the object is placed further away from the mirror or lens than the focal point. This real image is inverted, as shown in two cases of a convex lens in the figure given below. For example, if an object is placed between F and 2F, we get a small, real and inverted image, as shown in figure (a). In case (b), we obtain a virtual, erect and highly magnified image when the object is placed between P and f of a convex lens.
