Rowlatt Satyagraha was in response to the British government enacting the Rowlatt Act.
Despite the unanimous opposition of the Indian members, the Imperial Legislative Council hastily approved the Rowlatt Act (1919). It granted the government the authority to suppress political activity and permitted the two-year detention of political prisoners without charge. To protest the proposed Rowlatt Act, Gandhiji decided to organise a nationwide satyagraha in 1919.
