Sliding friction is the friction which comes into play when two surfaces are sliding against each other and static friction is the friction which is there between two surfaces when they are at rest. Due to how the two surfaces' imperfections interact, sliding friction is lower than static friction. But when an object is at a static position or rest, it experiences a large amount of friction on it which is static friction.
