In solids, particles are tightly packed with strong intermolecular forces of attraction and less intermolecular spaces between particles. Therefore, they are hard with definite volume.
Whereas, liquids particles are less closely packed and do not have a definite shape. They take up the shape of the container in which they are kept but have a definite volume. On the other hand, in gases, the particles are loosely packed and gases neither have definite shape nor volume.
