Infrasound is produced before the main shock wave during an earthquake. Low-frequency sound is known as infrasound. As frequency lowers, hearing gradually gets less sensitive. Therefore infrasound must have a strong enough sound pressure for people to hear it.
Rhinos have exceptionally sensitive ears that can detect infrasound at frequencies considerably below that humans can hear. Rhinos can hear at frequencies as low as four hertz, whereas a human baby with unharmed ears can typically only hear at frequencies as low as 20 hertz. Elephants and giraffes can both hear in this infrasonic range.
As a result, because animals can sense infrasonic sounds, we can observe some of them becoming agitated and beginning to run in different directions immediately before earthquakes.
