When the sulphur dioxide and oxygen react in the presence of catalysts and form sulphur trioxide fumes. Sulphur trioxide is powerfully in contact with moist air and dissolves in water, liberating much heat and producing sulphuric acid. The solutions of the trioxide in sulfuric acid are called fuming sulfuric acid or oleum. Basically, sulphur trioxide is the result of the oxidation of sulphur dioxide. This reaction can happen in two ways. It will happen in a backward or forward way. The sulphur dioxide can be oxidised into sulphur trioxide, or the sulphur trioxide can be reduced into sulphur dioxide.
