The airport is named after Shivaji,  Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire during the 17th century. It is the 14th busiest airport in Asia and the second busiest airport in the country. In the year 2018, the passenger traffic of Mumbai Airport was about 49.8 million. It has a total land area of about 750 hectares and two opening terminals. The airport is controlled and operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited. The Chhatrapati Shivaji airport was awarded the best airport in Asia-Pacific in 2020.
