The symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria conquer the root hairs of host plants, where they multiply and stimulate formation of root nodules, enlargements of plant cells and bacteria in intimate association. With the nodules the bacteria convert free nitrogen to ammonia, which the host plant utilises for its development. Ammonia is the nitrogen-containing nutrient that plants require for growth. This process is known as nitrogen fixation.
