The reason the sky is blue during the daytime when there are no clouds is that air molecules scatter blue light from the sun more than red light. Since the size of atmospheric particles is comparable to the wavelength of blue light, they scatter blue light the most.
We view the sky as blue because the sunlight that reaches our eyes contains a greater proportion of short, bluish wavelengths compared to middle and long wavelengths. In the absence of an atmosphere, the sky appears black, as shown by images of the lunar sky taken from the moon. But there is light even in a pitch-black sky.
