A longitudinal wave produced by the vibration of neighbouring of air particles pushes each other horizontally to the right and backwards and creates a lower pressure area allowing the air particles to move back to the left. Due to this longitudinal motion of the particles, there is the formation of regions some of which are spread apart and others are compressed together and these regions are known as rarefactions and compression respectively. The compressions are high air pressure regions while rarefactions are low air pressure regions. The density of air at low pressure is decreased.
