Earthing is done to protect us from any electric shocks. Most electric appliances and mains of the houses are earthed. Suppose there is any break in the insulation of the wire. In that case, the live wire may come in contact with the body of the appliance and pass the current to the appliance. On being touched, a fatal shock can occur if these appliances are earthed, which means that charges are discharged to the earth when the body comes in contact with the earth directly or indirectly. Any leakage of electric current is transmitted to the ground.
