Himachal Pradesh's Gaddi shepherds reared goats and sheep. They travelled to feed their flocks and spent the winters on the lower slopes of the Shiwalik range. They migrated in April and spent the summer in Lahaul and Spiti. Many of them relocated to the high mountain plains after the snow melted and the high pass cleared. They began to retreat by September and led their flocks to winter grazing pastures in the Shiwalik hills.
