The coaction of the three major river systems, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra and the Indus, from the Northern Plains. The vast basin is lying at the foothills of the Himalayas over millions of years by the deposition of alluvium from this fertile plain. The division of the northern plains is done into three phases. The first is the Indus plain, formed by the river Indus and its tributaries which form the western part of the northern plains; this is commonly referred to as the Punjab Plains. The majority of this plain lies in Pakistan. The second is the Ganga plain which extends between Ghaggar and Teesta river. The states comprising this plain are Haryana, UP, Bihar and partly Jharkhand and Bengal.
The third is the Brahmaputra plain which majorly lies in the state of Assam, forming the largest riverine island in the world.
