Indentured labour was indirectly a new form of slavery. Indentured labourers worked under a contract for the employer to pay off the passage to a new country. The agents responsible for bringing in such labourers lured them in with promises of a better life and higher income. However, after the labourers reached their destinations, they found harsh conditions. Lakhs of Indians and Chinese migrated to countries like Fiji, Trinidad and other locations with plantations. Indentured labour got dubbed a new system of slavery in the 19th century.
