The Kalangs of Java were a skilled group of forest cutters and shifting cultivation. They were so valuable that when the Mataram kingdom of Java split in 1755, the 6,000 Kalang families were divided equally between the two kingdoms. It would have been difficult to harvest teak and build the kings' palaces without their expertise. When the Dutch took control of the forests in the eighteenth century, they attempted to make the Kalangs work for them. The Kalangs resisted in 1770 by attacking a Dutch fort at Joana, but the uprising was put down.
