Gandhiji started a fast until death when the British administration agreed to Ambedkar's demand for separate electorates for the Dalits. He believed that having separate electorates for Dalits would delay their social integration. However, Ambedkar eventually agreed with Gandhiji's stance, which led to the Poona Pact of September 1932. It granted reserved seats in provincial and national legislative bodies for the Depressed Classes (later called Schedule Castes). Still, these seats had to be voted by the general electorate.
