Depending on the direction of the displacement of particles, these waves are classified as longitudinal and transverse waves. Longitudinal waves are those in which displacement of particles of the medium are in the direction of propagation of waves. They travel making crests and troughs in the waves. Sound waves are an example of longitudinal waves. Transverse waves are those in which the displacement of particles of the medium are in the perpendicular direction to the direction of propagation of the wave. They travel creating regions of compression and rarefaction. Waves which are created on the surface of water are an example of transverse waves.
