Detailed Solution

The statement is false.
Water covers about 71 per cent of the total earth’s surface. Around 97 per cent of the total volume of the world’s water exists in the form of salty oceans, and only 3 per cent of water is available as freshwater. Out of this 3 per cent of freshwater, 2.5 per cent of water exists in the form of ice sheets and glaciers in Antarctica, Greenland, and other mountainous regions of the world, and 0.75 per cent is stored as groundwater in the world’s aquifers. The remaining water exists in the form of lakes, rivers, and vapours. Also, India receives about 4 per cent of the total rain in the world and has a rank of 133 globally in terms of water availability per year.   The correct statement would be that 97% of water exists as oceans and only 3% as freshwater.
