Detailed Solution

Gametes are of two types: the male gamete (sperm) and the female gamete (ovum).

  1. Spermatogenesis

This is the process of producing male gametes (sperms). Sperms are haploid (n) and are formed from spermatogonia, which are diploid (2n) cells. Spermatogonia act as meiocytes since they undergo meiosis to produce haploid sperms.

  1. Oogenesis

This is the process of gamete formation in females. It results in the production of a haploid ovum (n) from oogonia, which are diploid (2n) cells. The oogonia act as meiocytes and undergo meiosis in the ovaries to give rise to haploid ova.

  1. Gametogenesis

Gametogenesis, in general, is the process where diploid cells (2n) form haploid gametes (n) through meiosis and cell differentiation.

  1. Chromosome Relationship

The number of chromosomes in gametes is always half the number present in meiocytes of the same species. For example, if a meiocyte has 2n chromosomes, then each gamete formed will have n chromosomes.
