Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, Veerasalingam Panthulu and Swamy Dayananda Saraswathi opposed widow remarriage.
The movement to support widow remarriage had spread to other parts of the country by the second half of the nineteenth century. Veerasalingam Pantulu created a group for widow remarriage in the Telugu-speaking areas of the Madras Presidency. Around the same time, a group of young reformers and intellectuals in Bombay committed to striving for the same cause. Meanwhile, in the north, widow remarriage was also supported by Swami Dayanand Saraswati, who founded the reform group known as Arya Samaj. But only a small percentage of widows remarried. Thus due to the lack of social acceptance of marriage, conservative organisations opposed the new law.
