The Jallianwala Bagh massacre (also called the Amritsar massacre) took place on the day of Baisakhi on the 13th of April, 1919. The Bagh is located in Amritsar, Punjab. In 1919, when the Rowlatt Act was passed, various strikes and protests took place all over India. To curb these protests, the British government imposed martial law in the state of Punjab. On the 13th of April, a large crowd had gathered in the Bagh area, who were unaware of the prohibitory orders. The troops came around, blocked exit points, and opened fires on thousands of unarmed men, women, and children. Almost 1000 people died in this incident.
