Jallianwala massacre is also known as the Amritsar massacre. The horrible death of hundreds of innocent people by the Gurkha British Indian army under the instructions of the then Anglo-Indian Brigadier R.E.H. Dyer is referred to as the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre or the Amritsar Massacre of April 13, 1919. These individuals were peacefully opposing the Rowlatt Act of 1919. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr Satyapal, two nationalist activists in Punjab, were detained by British officials on April 9, 1919, without cause other than the fact that they had spoken at demonstrations. They were then brought to an unidentified location. The thousands of Indian protesters who turned out on April 10 to support their leaders were resentful of this. With his troops, Brigadier-General Dyer arrived on the scene. General Dyer ordered the troops to encircle the mob, block the only escape, and begin firing into the unarmed crowd, which resulted in the deaths of over 1000 unarmed men, women, and children.
