Jamdani is a fine muslin with decorative motifs. Indian textiles were an essential item of export till the early 19th century. They dominated the European market. The excellent variety of cotton and silk was of enormous importance. Muslin was a fine variety of cotton. It was introduced to Europe by Arab merchants in Mosul. Jamdani was a type of fine muslin cloth that was exported to Europe. It had decorative motifs woven on the loom in the colours grey and white. The Jamdani cloth was characterised by the use of cloth and gold threads. Jamdani textiles were mainly produced in the regions of Dacca in Bengal and Lucknow in the United Provinces.
