James Mill and Thomas Macaulay favoured European education.
With the establishment of colonial rule, the Britishers needed to civilise the natives and make economic gains. They considered it their duty to educate the Indians. The question arose of the type of education to be imparted to the Indian: anglicised or oriental. James Mill was the leading proponent of European education. He considered the oriental form of education to be impractical and useless. Education, according to him, should be practical. He favoured the scientific education of the west to be superior to the oriental education of sacred texts and poetry. Thus he rejected vernacular education and favoured the spread of the English language.
