James Mill referred to the period before British rule in India as the darkest period. Scottish economist and political philosopher James Mill released his massive three-volume work A History of British India in 1817. In this book, he split Indian history into the Hindu, Muslim, and British eras. According to Mill, all Asian societies were less civilised than those in Europe. He recounted how despotic rulers of the Hindu and Muslim faith controlled India before the arrival of the British. Superstition, caste taboos, and religious intolerance were prevalent in India, according to Mill.
