Detailed Solution

James Rennel prepared the first map of India in 1782.
James Rennell, an English geographer and historian, is credited with inventing oceanography. James Rennell provided maps of India to Robert Clive, the general who won the Battle of Plassey. He was aware of the role maps played in the British Empire's expansion and increased control over India. As a committed ally of the British, Rennell produced multiple maps for them. Further illustrating Indian acceptance of British authority in India, he even made a painting of Brahmins handing Britishers their sacred texts.
