Since ancient times, rice cultivation has contributed to the growth of the island's population. Indonesia is the third largest rice producer in the world and one of the largest consumers of rice in the world. The country's paddy area grew from 11.4 million hectares in 1995 to 13.2 million hectares in 2010, accounting for 24% of total farmland. Rice is the largest food crop in this country. The Indonesian government has two major initiatives to increase rice production - Rice Transmigration Scheme 2009: Rice production is highly concentrated in the islands of Java and Sumatra. About 60% of the total output comes from Java.
