The dams were hailed as the "temples of modern India" by Jawaharlal Nehru. The reason behind this proclamation was that these multi-purpose projects would develop agriculture and the village economy. Moreover, it would integrate them with industrialization. Traditionally, dams were built to impound rivers and rainwater so that the water could be used later to irrigate the agricultural fields. But, nowadays, dams are built to serve multiple purposes like irrigation, electricity generation, recreation, industrial uses, etc. Therefore, dams are known as multi-purpose projects. These multi-purpose projects were launched in India after its independence. It was believed that these multi-purpose projects would lead India on the path of development and progress after the huge devastation of the Indian economy due to colonial rule by Britishers.
