Detailed Solution

Johann Gutenberg devised the first-known printing press in the 1430s. The production of handwritten copies was no longer enough to satisfy the ever-increasing needs of the emerging reading public. Copying was not just laborious but also expensive and time-consuming. Moreover, the circulation of manuscripts had its limitations as they were fragile and not easily portable. Woodblocks became even more popular by the fifteenth century, but the need for a cheaper and quicker means of reproducing texts was on the rise. Johann Gutenberg thus came up with the breakthrough printing press in Germany.
