Jyotirao Phule was a social reformer from the state of Maharashtra. Jyotirao Phule was one of India's most prominent "low-caste" leaders. He set out to refute the Brahmans' assertion that, since they were Aryans, they were superior to everyone else. The Aryans, according to Phule, were outsiders who arrived from outside the subcontinent and conquered and oppressed the actual citizens of the nation—those who had existed here since before the arrival of the Aryans. Phule claimed that the so-called low castes, or indigenous people, had a right to the land, whereas the "higher" castes had no claim to it.
