Jyotirao Phule was born in 1827.
Jyotirao Phule was one of the most outspoken of the "low-caste" leaders. He was born in 1827 and attended Christian missionary schools. As he grew older, he formed his own opinions about the injustices of caste society. He set out to refute the Brahmans' claim that because they were Aryans, they were superior to others. The Aryans, according to Phule, were foreigners who came from outside the subcontinent and defeated and subjugated the true children of the country, those who had lived here before the Aryans arrived. As the Aryans gained control, they began to regard the defeated population as inferior, as low-caste people.
