Many handlooms were set up in the 20th century. During the freedom struggle, the nationalists favoured the indigenous production of goods. They aimed to ban British clothing and reestablish the hegemony of Indian Industries through the Swadeshi movement. Hence, the importance of Charkha and Khadi was popularised by Mahatma Gandhi.
