The Khilafat issue was the issue regarding a harsh peace treaty imposed on the Ottoman head, a threat to the Khalifa, their Islamic spiritual head, and the Khilafat issue was seen as an opportunity to unify India.
Ottoman Turkey was defeated when the first World War ended. There were rumours that a harsh peace treaty would be imposed on the spiritual head of the Islamic world, the Ottoman Emperor, who was known as the Khalifa, and it threatened the Khalifa’s powers. Bombay, in March 1929, witnessed the formation of the Khilafat Committee.The leaders were MuhammadAli and Shaukat Ali. In consultation with Mahatma Gandhi, they saw an opportunity to launch a unified national movement and unite Hindus and Muslims over the issue. The Calcutta session of congress in September 1920 started the non-cooperation movement in support of the Khilafat and Swaraj.
