Kittiko Hachchiko was launched in 1988. It meant pluck and plant. It started a non–violent protest, where people used to pluck the eucalyptus plants and then planted the tree saplings that were considered helpful to the people.
In 1984, a company, namely Karnataka Pulpwood Limited, was established by the Karnataka government. This company was allotted about 30000 hectares of land for free for 40 years. The issue was that this land was in use by local farmers. Local farmers used this land for animal grazing and for various domestic services like extracting the wood pulp from trees for cooking. But the company started to grow the plant Eucalyptus on the respective land for making the pulp of paper. Due to these circumstances, this movement was initiated.
