Ambedkar shared his first experience of caste-based discrimination, which took place when he was only nine years old. He had gone to the railway station and was waiting for his father and his siblings to go to Koregaon. He waited a long time at the station, but his father did not come. Seeing this, the station master came to enquire. When he asked them what their caste was, Ambedkar said that they were Mahars. On hearing this, the station master left and only came back after a while. He returned and inquired what they were planning to do. Bhim then replied that they had the money to hire a bullock cart. But by then, everyone had come to know that they were Mahars, so no cart man picked them up. They were denied this service because of their status as "untouchables".
