Kosovo was a part of Yugoslavia.
The region of Kosovo was once a part of what used to be the country of Yugoslavia. During the late 90s and early 2000s, the country witnessed severe ethnic conflict. The majority Serb community, bolstered by their nationalist leader Milosevic, took to ethnic cleansing of the Albanians and massacred them in huge numbers. Although the Albanians were a majority in Kosovo, they were a minority in the entire country of Yugoslavia. The Serbs saw this as an opportunity to dominate the country and drive out the Albanian population. The armed forces supported the Serbs in this ethnic massacre.
