Kunbis were peasant pastoralists in the Maratha region.
Before Shivaji took over the empire of Maratha, he got support from groups of highly mobile peasant pastoralists regionally called Kunbis. They acted as the backbone of the Maratha army, which used to challenge the Mughals in the Peninsular region of Deccan. In addition, powerful Warrior families, Deshmukh, supported Shivaji in establishing a stable Empire called Maratha. Thus, militarily Shivaji had skilful people around him, which acted as an added advantage for sustained welding opposition to the Mughal rule. Through his success, he became the king of Maratha in 1674 and called himself Chhatrapati Maharaj.
