Karnataka is the largest silk-producing country. Mysore and Northern Bangalore are known as the "Silk City" and contribute to much of the silk production. The state produces almost 45% of the country's total morus alba silk. Silk is a natural protein fiber composed primarily of fibroin protein. It is produced by the larvae of certain insects of the silk moth species and is used to form cocoons. These larvae are not worms, but they are called silk moths.
