Detailed Solution

Laterite soil is mainly found in the Western Ghats, which include the Southern states, some parts of West Bengal, and northeastern states. Laterite soil develops in tropical and subtropical climates with an alternative wet and dry season. It is formed under the conditions of high temperature and heavy rainfall with alternate wet and dry periods, which leads to the leaching of the soil leaving only oxides of iron and aluminium. With low content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, this soil is said to be less fertile. Hence, this soil lacks fertility and can be improved by proper irrigation and adding fertilisers.
