Between the middle of the 12th century and the start of the 16th century, Gothic cathedrals and churches were built throughout Europe. The cathedrals stand out in particular for their enormous height and significant use of stained glass to illuminate the interior spaces. The buttresses of Gothic cathedrals are external, as opposed to the internal ones utilised by Romanesque constructions to sustain weight. By shifting the weight of the roof away from the walls and onto an exterior load-bearing framework, these so-called flying buttresses permitted churches to be erected much taller. The Gothic architectural style, distinguished by its vaulted ceilings and exquisitely detailed façade, stood for hundreds of years as a symbol of the glory of God and the church's dominant position in European civilisation. The Gothic architectural style was established by the Basilica of Saint-Denis in nearby Paris (1135–1144). The church, which was rebuilt under the direction of Abbot Suger, was revered for being the location of Saint Denis' martyrdom and the final resting place of practically all French kings dating back to the 7th century.
