Detailed Solution

Like poles repel each other and, unlike poles, attract each other.
Every magnet is surrounded by a magnetic field, represented by magnetic force lines. Magnetic lines of force extend from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet and from the south pole to the north pole within the magnet. Near the poles, where the magnetic force is strongest, the density of magnetic field lines is higher. When two magnets with like poles face each other, the lines of force are in opposing directions, and so like poles repel each other. When the unlike poles of a bar magnet face one another, the magnetic lines of force are in the same direction, attracting the opposite poles.
