Detailed Solution

concept - Lime water is a calcium hydroxide ( Ca(OH) 2 ) saturated solution. "Pure" limewater is clear and colourless, with a slight earthy odour and bitter taste. It is alkaline in nature with a pH of 12.4.
Lime water can be prepared by mixing calcium hydroxide ( Ca(OH) 2 ) with water and removing the excess suspended solids (e.g. by filtration) as it is not completely soluble in water.
Now, Calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to form the precipitate of calcium carbonate and water.
Thus, lime water turns milky due to the formation of an insoluble suspension of calcium carbonate.
The reaction is:
Ca(OH)2+CO2CaCO3+H2O
Hence, the correct option is (3).
