Detailed Solution

Linguistic and religious differences are found simultaneously in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka comprises a diverse population. There are two major social groups, namely, the Sinhalese community, which form the majority, and the Sri Lankan Tamils, which are a minority. Like most countries, Sri Lanka also has social differences. The Sinhalese wanted the Sinhala language to be recognised as the only official language in Sri Lanka in the 1950s, and the Sri Lankan Tamils favoured Tamil to be made the official language. Furthermore, the social groups also practise and preach different religions. Most Sinhalese are Buddhists, while Sri Lankan Tamils are Hindus or Muslims. The linguistic and religious differences in Sri Lanka led to social division leading to conflicts and tensions in the 1980s.
