- Purpose: To conserve biodiversity, promote sustainable human development, and serve as sites for research and education. They are divided into three zones: a highly protected Core Zone, a Buffer Zone where limited human activity is allowed, and a Transition Zone for sustainable development.
- Example:Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve, West Bengal, protects the unique mangrove ecosystem and the Royal Bengal Tiger.
