Detailed Solution

Bones and cartilage differ mainly in consistency, blood supply, and cell type. Bones are hard, rigid, and have a good blood supply, while cartilage is soft, flexible, and lacks blood vessels. Bones contain osteocytes, whereas cartilage contains chondrocytes.

1. Consistency

  • Bones: Hard, rigid, and non-flexible. The matrix contains both organic and inorganic substances such as calcium phosphate, giving bones strength and firmness.
  • Cartilage: Soft, flexible, and elastic. The matrix is completely organic, made of collagen and proteoglycans, allowing it to bend easily.

2. Blood Supply

  • Bones: Richly supplied with blood vessels, which helps in quick repair, nourishment, and growth.
  • Cartilage: Lacks blood vessels (avascular). Nutrients diffuse from nearby tissues, making healing much slower.

3. Cell Type

  • Bones: Made up of bone cells called osteocytes.
  • Cartilage: Made up of cartilage cells called chondrocytes.
